For the first time since October 1994, United Airlines St. Croix service is returning. Beginning in late October 2026, United will operate weekly nonstop flights between Newark Liberty International Airport and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in Christiansted. It is a significant development for the island and for anyone considering a move here.

The route was reported by The Virgin Islands Consortium, citing airline route data published by Enilria. The Newark-St. Croix market is currently unserved nonstop, making this the first major-carrier addition to the island’s airlift in years.

United Airlines St. Croix Route: 32 Years in the Making

Continental Airlines, now part of United, last flew nonstop between Newark and St. Croix in October 1994. For three decades, passengers from the New York-New Jersey area had no direct option to the island, adding hours of connection time to every trip.

The timing matters. Spirit Airlines, which held roughly 10 percent of the Newark-St. Croix market before ceasing all operations earlier this year, left a real gap in airlift and carrier choice. United’s return fills that gap with a premium carrier and a loyalty program that Spirit could never offer.

What United Airlines’ St. Croix Service Means for Real Estate

Improved air access and real estate demand are closely linked on island markets. The easier it is to reach St. Croix, especially nonstop, the more visitors arrive, fall in love with the island, and start asking about buying or relocating. This route does several important things at once:

Broader reach from the Northeast. The New York metropolitan area is one of the largest sources of Caribbean real estate buyers. A nonstop connection removes the biggest friction point for that audience.

Access to 110 million MileagePlus members. According to Fly The Whale CEO Omer ErSelcuk, United’s MileagePlus program has 110 million members. Frequent flyers tend to book around their preferred airline network. This route puts St. Croix on the map for millions who may never have considered the island an easy destination to include in their program.

Stronger diaspora connections. The Virgin Islands diaspora is heavily concentrated in the Northeast. A direct flight makes it easier for family members, returning residents, and second-home owners to visit and invest.

Added competition, better pricing. American Airlines currently holds the dominant share of the Newark-St. Croix market. United’s presence should create pricing pressure that benefits all travelers.

Is Now a Good Time to Buy on St. Croix?

Improved connectivity tends to support property values. Markets that were difficult to reach often see renewed buyer interest when that changes. St. Croix consistently offers a more attainable entry point compared to St. Thomas or St. John, with the same natural beauty, U.S. territory advantages, and quality of life that make the Virgin Islands so compelling.

If you have been considering a purchase on St. Croix, this is the kind of news worth paying attention to. The buyers who move early tend to do best.
