One thing that everyone in the Virgin Islands has in common is the shared desire to lower their WAPA bills. Month after month we regret picking up the mail and seeing that envelope from our power company. What can be done?
Short of investing in solar or wind power, which really are options only for home owners with extra savings, here are a few tips to lower your monthly bill:
1. Keep your refrigerator and freezers full. That’s right, full! Food acts as insulation, and lessens the amount of time that the fridge has to run to stay cool. Just watch out if there’s a power outage and you don’t have a generator.
2. Lower the temperature setting on your hot water heater. The higher it is, the higher your bill.
3. Clean your refrigerator coils often. Dust and debris pile up on your coils, making it harder for your refrigerator to cool.
4. Use smart strip surge protectors that automatically shut off plugs when they’re not being used.
5. If you haven’t heard of CFLs, or compact fluorescent lamps, go buy some! They use up to one-fifth less power and last up to fifteen times longer than incandescent bulbs.
6. Dryer Balls. Can’t say that I’ve personally used them, but apparently they cut down on the dry time and substitute the need for dryer sheets.
